Much more can be done to improve the SEO of your WordPress website, though. This is how to set up SEO on a fresh WordPress blog. Permalinks Permalinks in WordPress by default are numbered, and this is not good for SEO. You want the title of your blog posts to make it into the URL for the page. So the first thing you can do to improve the SEO on your WordPress blog is set up permalinks so they are the title of your blog and not just some random number. You can change this setting in Settings > Permalinks. Website URL You want to make sure your website URL in WordPress matches Google’s search settings so there are no conflicts in the sitemap WordPress produces. So go to Settings > General and make sure the web URL listed is exactly the same as it shows up in Google’s Search Console. If you haven’t set up Google’s Webmaster Tools yet, do this as well by clicking here and following the step-by-step instructions. Stop Words Stop words are unnecessary words like “the”, “a”, “for”, etc. These words aren’t needed or wanted in your permalink structure because they make your blog URLs longer without adding any type of SEO benefit. When you make a WordPress post, make sure you are removing these words from the permalink structure before you post. If you already have existing posts with stop words in them, leave them alone if there are already websites linking to them. Titles Your page’s title is the number one most important factor in your SEO ranking. It is the first line people see when they do a search on a search engine, and it’s also the first words they see when they visit the website page. NoFollow If you have any links that are distrusted or relatively off topic, you can use the “rel=nofollow” attribute in your link to make sure a search engine doesn’t index it along with your page’s content. This should be used with caution though and only applied to links that genuinely offer no use to your post or to search engines.
